Domino Server 6.5 All Platforms

We are using iNotes at our retail locations for email. As you know, there is no way to check for new email in iNotes without logging back into the server. To make it easier on our locations, our POS programmers wrote a VB program that uses POP3 to check for unread messages. It runs about every 15 minutes at each location. Needless to say it really overruns the POP service and impacts the Domino server greatly. Is there an easier method of checking for unread messages when you use iNotes as the client?
